The concept of canned food originated from the French inventor Nicolas Appel’s food preservation experiment using glass jars. According to legend, the metal can was invented by the Frenchman Philippe de Girard, but this technology was passed on to replace the patented Peter Duran, and it was patented in 1810. [1] But Duran did not enter the canned food industry. He sold the patent to two other Englishmen in 1812, Brian Donkin and John Hall. The two improved the production process and opened the world’s first canned food factory on Southwark Park Road in London. By 1813, this food factory was already supplying the Royal Navy. By 1820, the use of cans had expanded to the storage of gunpowder, seeds, and turpentine.
Early cans were sealed by soldering with lead-containing solder, and there was a risk of lead poisoning. In 1845, the British Sir John Franklin led 133 officers and men on two ships “HMS Erebus” and “HMS Terror” (Captain: Colonel Francis Croze) to explore the Arctic. All the five people who got off the ship were missing. It was only a few years later it was discovered that they had all been killed. The investigation confirmed that the crew did not starve to death but was caused by lead poisoning.
In 1901, the United States established the American Canning Company, which specializes in the production of empty cans. This company met 90% of the demand in the United States at the time.
